• Chicks in the Times: Three Cs for Businesses Contemplating Social Media

    If you’re still thinking about whether or not social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Four Square, Pinterest, or You Tube are necessary to promote your business, think about these three Cs.

    1) Choice: Just because every other business seems to be using social media doesn’t mean you have to.

    If what you’re currently doing to market your business is working, then, by all means, keep doing it.

    And, over your midday coffee, I encourage you to consider the following:

    Social media forces you, on a daily basis, to be mindful about your business – from whom you engage with online to the products and services that your business offers.

    Always remember, if you don’t brand yourself, somebody else will.

    Social media offers a great opportunity to take control of your brand.

    Social media allows you to see what your competition is up to and to constantly hone your product and service offerings and set your business apart from the competition.

    Social media activity affects what page of search engine results your business’s website will be found on.

    Comments on your blog, views of your videos, likes on your Facebook posts, or retweets on Twitter, are called “social signals” and they are becoming an increasingly important factor in determining whether or not your business will be found online.

    2) Capacity: This is a big one and can impact your success.

    Having a social media presence may look easy, but it takes time, planning, patience, and technical know-how.

    Here are a couple of questions to consider before you get started.

    Do you have at least 30 minutes per day to dedicate to managing your social media profiles?

    If not, consider an employee who knows your business well or a socialmedia consultant.

    There is nothing wrong with delegating the task of social media; however, it is important that you have a social media plan, a social media policy, and a contract in place to guide efforts and outline what to do when things go wrong. They may not, but it’s important that you have a plan in place.

    Do you have the technical know how?

    If yes, excellent. If not, there are myriad of resources out there to help you.

    3) Change: Some social media platforms, such as Facebook, are known for change.

    If you love change, social media will be a good fit.

    If change is your best friend’s best friend, then you may want to consider hiring your best friend to manage your social media.

    Okay, not really, but know that learning curves are definitely part of the social media package.

    Of course, there are other considerations when determining if social media is a good tool to promote your business, but these three Cs should prove helpful with the big social media decision.
